The learning resources on this page were created in an effort to promote cross-cultural understanding as well as celebrate Indigenous culture through data science and mathematical modeling. Go to the Get Started guide to learn about how our interactive learning resources work.

Lesson Plans

• Coast Salish baskets: Learn about and explore the patterns (motifs) in Coast Salish baskets, and use mathematical and coding formulas to create these patterns.
• Discover fish traps with data: Learn about the types and effectiveness of the fish traps through Indigenous mathematics and engineering.
• Explore fish harvesting with data science: Use mathematical modeling to explore the impact of fishing on pink salmon populations.
• Indigenous populations in Canada: Use data science to explore the current location of Indigenous Lands in the Americas and the geographic locations of First Nations people at the time of contact with Europeans.

Learning Modules

• The geography of residential schools: Create a map of residential school locations and learn about their impact on Indigenous children.

Data Visualizations

• Coast Salish baskets: Explore basic geometric shapes in the traditional weaving of the Coast Salish people, and interact with a 3D Salish basket to examine it from different angles.
